A Realistic Daily Language Routine for People With Jobs
Most language routines are written for people with two free hours and no children. Here is one built for a normal week — thirty minutes a day, arranged so the time goes where it actually pays.
The thirty minutes
- 5 minutes — review. Yesterday's new words, read aloud. Out loud is not optional; silent reading builds a vocabulary you cannot pronounce.
- 15 minutes — speaking. A real conversation, or an AI partner if nobody is around. This is the part that makes the rest work.
- 5 minutes — repair. Write down the three things you could not say today. These are tomorrow's words, and they are worth ten times a random list.
- 5 minutes — input. A song, a short video, a page of something. Ends the session on something enjoyable.
Why speaking gets the biggest slice
Because it is the only part that reveals what you do not know. Reading lets you skate past a gap; a conversation stops dead at it. That stopping point is the single most useful piece of information you will get all day, which is why the "repair" step immediately follows it.
The bad-day version
Five minutes. Read yesterday's words aloud and send one message to your language partner. That is it. The routine survives on days you keep it badly — it dies on days you skip it entirely, because skipping twice is much easier than skipping once.
The weekly additions
- One longer conversation — thirty to sixty minutes, ideally voice.
- One game or something playful — word games exercise vocabulary retrieval under time pressure, which is exactly what conversation demands.
- One review pass over the week's repair list.
How long before it shows?
Thirty minutes a day is about 180 hours a year. For Spanish or French, that is meaningful conversational ground within a year; see how long it takes to learn a language for the fuller picture. The people who get there are not the ones with the best routine — they are the ones still doing a mediocre routine in month eight.
To put the speaking block on rails, find a regular partner on the community wall and agree a fixed day.
