Best AI for Learning a Language: How to Choose One
Every “best AI for language learning” list has the same problem: it is a snapshot of a market that changes monthly, written by someone who tried each tool for an afternoon. Within a release it is wrong, and it cannot tell you the thing you actually want to know, which is whether a given tool will work for your language at your level.
So here are the questions instead. Run them against anything, including us.
The eight questions
- 1. Can you speak to it, out loud, on the free tier? A startling number of AI language tools are text-only until you pay, which means the free tier trains the wrong skill entirely. If your goal is talking, this is the first filter.
- 2. Does it correct you mid-conversation, or grade you at the end? A correction attached to the sentence you were trying to say lands. A report card after eight minutes does not.
- 3. Can you set how much it corrects? Being pulled up on every article is discouraging; being let off everything leaves you fluent and wrong. The tools that ask are better than the tools that decide.
- 4. How good is it in your target language? Almost all of these are dramatically better at Spanish and French than at Vietnamese, Urdu or Tagalog. Test your language specifically, on the free tier, before you judge the product.
- 5. Does it understand you when it should not? Say something with deliberately wrong tone or stress. If it sails through, its pronunciation feedback is decorative — and you will find out in a real conversation.
- 6. What happens to the transcript? You are speaking, at length, about your life. Check what is stored, for how long, whether it trains a model, and how you delete it.
- 7. Is there a path to real people? The tools that quietly cap out are the ones where AI is the whole product. Speaking to software has a ceiling, and it is lower than most learners expect.
- 8. What does the free tier actually let you finish? Not what it lets you start. Many give you a conversation and a half a day, which is fine — as long as you know before you build a routine on it.
The category error to avoid
Do not confuse an AI tool with a language course. Courses give you a syllabus, sequence and accountability. AI gives you unlimited, unembarrassed speaking time. They solve different problems, and the people who progress fastest usually run both plus a human, rather than hunting for the one app that replaces all three.
And be suspicious of any tool whose marketing leads on fluency in a number of months. Nobody can promise that, because it depends on your hours, your first language and how close it is to your target — and the honest answer, for most language pairs from English, is longer than any app wants to print. We wrote about that in how long it takes to learn a language.
Where TalkSibi sits, honestly
We are not an AI tutor with a community bolted on; we are a language-exchange community where AI covers the hours nobody is online. The AI experts are free, available 24/7, powered by Claude, and correct you gently while you talk. If what you want is purely an AI tutor with a structured curriculum, a dedicated course app will serve you better — and that is a fair answer to give you before you sign up rather than after.
Run the eight questions on us: speak on the free tier, in your language, and see. 18+, photo-checked. More: what an AI tutor can and cannot do, how the corrections work.
