What Is a Language Exchange? A Plain-English Guide
A language exchange is the simplest idea in language learning: you help someone with the language you speak, and they help you with the language you are learning. Nobody pays anybody. You are both the teacher and both the student.
How a language exchange actually works
Say you speak English and want to learn Spanish. You find someone who speaks Spanish and wants to learn English. You split your time — half in Spanish, half in English — and you correct each other as you go. That is the whole method. It has been around since long before apps existed; people did it by letter, then by phone, and now in a browser.
The two halves matter. If you spend the whole hour in your own language, you have given a free lesson and received nothing. Most people set a timer.
What a first session looks like
- Five minutes of small talk in whichever language feels easier, just to break the ice.
- Twenty minutes in their language. They correct you — gently, and not every single mistake.
- Twenty minutes in yours. Now you are the patient one.
- Five minutes to agree what next time looks like.

Exchange, tutor, or class — which is which?
A tutor is paid, structured, and answerable to you. A class gives you a syllabus and classmates. An exchange gives you neither, and gives you something they mostly cannot: unlimited, unhurried time with a real speaker who has no lesson plan to get through. Most people who get fluent use a mix. We wrote a longer comparison in language exchange vs tutor.
What makes an exchange work
Three things, in order of importance: showing up regularly, speaking more than you read, and being corrected. A partner who never corrects you is pleasant company and poor practice. Ask for it explicitly in the first session — most people are too polite to start.
Starting one today
You need one partner, not twenty. On TalkSibi the community wall shows people learning the language you speak, so the match is mutual by design, and you can start with a message before committing to a voice call. If nobody is awake in your timezone, an AI partner will hold the conversation until someone is.
